FIRE AT CITY HALL December 5th, 2012

>CHANGES TO SCHEDULES DUE TO FIRE
AND UPDATE ON CLEANUP PROGRESS

Sunday, December 9, 2012 - IML News - Due to the fire that occurred at City Hall earlier this week, there has been a couple of schedule changes.
The regular Monday evening City Council Meeting has been changed to Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 7pm, and will be held at City Hall. The agenda for the meeting, according to IML City Clerk, Lanette Kunz, should be posted no later than Tuesday morning.
Iron Mountain Lake Municipal Court has been rescheduled for Friday, January 4, 2013 beginning at 9am at City Hall.
The children's "Visit with Santa" will be held as scheduled at City Hall on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 5 till 8pm. There will be treats, snacks and of course Santa Claus!
To update the situation with City Hall, the entire interior of the building is being cleaned due to all of the smoke damage. On Monday the interior will be painted with a special paint. It has not been finalized yet, but most likely the insurance will be covering the damages to all of the electronic devices, and most certainly the furnace and air conditioner, which were both heavily damaged by smoke and fire. And according to specialists, all of the smoke damaged electronics will need to be replaced, and hopefully the insurance company will see it that way also. Much of the work should be completed by the end of the week. The installation of a new heating and cooling system may take a little longer.
There has been a flurry of work being done at City Hall, to try and get it up and running again as soon as possible. The ladies of the Park Board have been right in the thick of it; doing all they can to be sure it is safe and ready for the children's Christmas party on Thursday. City Clerk, Lanette Kunz, has been, literally and physically, running City Hall from her vehicle that is parked in front of the building during City Hall business hours. She has been busy drafting the official inventory, making phone calls and also accepting payments for sewer bills and court fines. She is jokingly referring to her current situation as the "drive thru". And further assistance has been made by IML Police Officer John Penfield, two of the Alderpersons, Alderman Stodgell and Alderwomen Goodman, who are both from Ward 2, and Mayor Goodman. They have been spending a lot of time helping with the cleaning, running errands and ultimately making sure things are organized and absolutely nothing is left undone. It has been a real group effort, and a lot of progress has already been made.
As already reported, the presents that were collected for the IML Children's Christmas Fund, prior to the unfortunate fire, were ruined with caustic smoke damage. But over this past week, as news of the fire reached out, and beyond, our community, it has become extremely encouraging. People have been hearing about the situation and then stopping by, or calling, City Hall to offer their help and to make much needed donations. And for this, everyone involved with this project is extremely grateful. And all though there has been this amazing expression of generosity and good will, they are still a little short of their goals to meet the requests for Christmas assistance for the children. Therefore any amount of help and/or donations would still be greatly appreciated. You can contact City Hall at 573-734-2042 for any further information. Thank you!

>FIRE AT CITY HALL
EXTENSIVE SMOKE DAMAGE

December 5, 2012 – IML News – When Reserve Officer John Washburn arrived at Iron Mountain Lake to report for duty, at approximately 5:50 am this morning, he opened the IML Police Department entrance door and smoke rolled out from within the building. The Police Department area was full of smoke. As he entered the building to investigate further, he opened the rear pass-thru door that connected to City Hall. It was evident that a serious situation was happening. The IML City Hall was dense with smoke and from what he could see; it appeared to be coming from the furnace, which is located near the City Hall’s entrance door and beside the City Clerk’s area. Officer Washburn immediately called for fire assistance from dispatch. Bismarck Rural Fire Department responded at approximately 6:05am. When they made entrance to the City Hall area the furnace was now in flames. They quickly extinguished the fire and then determined that it was caused from faulty wiring within the furnace. As a side note, the furnace is estimated to be as old as the City Hall, which was built in the early 70’s.
Mayor Goodman was present, as well as Alderman Roger Stodgell and Alderwomen Goodman, both from Ward 2. They all expressed their sadness and their resolve to get City Hall back up and running as soon as possible. Smoke damages were extensive throughout the building, along with fire, heat and smoke damages to the furnace and a window air conditioner which is located directly above the furnace. Everywhere within the building the soot was lying thick, thick enough that you could write your name in it, quite visibly.
Further casualties of the soot damage were the children’s toys and gift items that were recently donated for the Iron Mountain Lake Children’s Christmas Fund. They were all lying beneath the City Hall’s Christmas tree. They are black with caustic soot damage and basically beyond salvage. “We can repair City Hall, but all of these gifts were donated for the children. And now we do not have any to give”, said Alderwomen Goodman who was visibly upset. She continued to say, “Everyone was so generous and the volunteers worked so hard to get what we had for the kids. Now what are we going to do? There are parents and children counting on us, the Christmas Fund. I hope people will respond, for the sake of the children, and help out during this unfortunate situation.”
The insurance adjuster will have to arrive before any cleanup can begin. City Hall, its self, is currently closed until cleanup and some repairs can be made. But City Clerk, Lanette Kunz, is currently sitting outside at a picnic table for those who wish to pay their sewer bills and fines. Mayor Goodman assures everyone that the City Hall will be repaired and its operations will resume as soon as possible. Updates will be reported when anything further becomes available.
