>THE BISMARCK FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT
WANTS YOU TO VOTE “YES” FOR THE TAX LEVY ON APRIL 3 rd, 2012
Wednesday, March 14, 2012 - IML News - On Monday evening, March 12, 2012, Mr. Chris Gibbons of the Bismarck Fire Protection District addressed the Iron Mountain Lake City Council and the people in attendance. He came to encourage the citizens of IML to vote “YES” for the tax levy proposed on the April 3rd election ballot and to also answer any possible questions. He went on to explain that a tax levy would be very beneficial for the property and homeowners here at IML. With the passage of the tax levy it would allow for better coverage for our area. As an example, one of the things that the passage of the levy could provide is a sub-station in our immediate area, which could reduce response time to IML residents by 10 to 15 minutes. They would also train IML volunteers to man a pumper and also make sure that the volunteers have the most current and up-to-date fire fighting training. They would also work to acquire a pumper that would be able to traverse the bridges, which has been an ongoing issue and would contribute to reducing response time. He went on to say that through the Bismarck Fire Protection District, and the passage of the tax levy, be believes that the sub-station could be achieved before the year’s end.
According to Mr. Gibbons, another benefit to the residents of IML, with the acquisition of new sub-station and an appropriate pumper, would be the lowering of homeowner insurance rates. Rates are governed by the Insurance Services Office, ISO. This organization calculates risks for insurance companies, which then determines your ability to acquire insurance and what possible rates you could pay. Mr. Gibbons went on to relate that with the addition of the sub-station, and the quicker response times, your ISO would be re-evaluated and your insurance rates would go down. He went on to say that, “This would be a WIN/WIN for you”. The insurance rate savings would in all likelihood off-set the costs of the tax levy. And more importantly, would give residents some peace of mind, knowing that help is just a few minutes away. Best said by State Representative Joe Dorman, who serves District 65 in the state of Oklahoma, “ISO ratings are tied mostly to fire departments.” “If you have an excellent fire department, a good emergency communications system and good access to water, that greatly improves your ISO rating and reduces the cost of your property insurance. In fact, homeowners can save up to about 10 percent for every level of improvement on the ISO rating.” http://www.joedorman.com/pressreleases.htm
Mr. Gibbons went on to stress that the tax levy is based on your ASSESSED, by the county, which is governed by the State and Missouri Legislature, property value. NOT your appraised value. And on the ASSESSED value, a rate of 28 cents per $100 value will be collected to go to your Bismarck Fire Protection District. According to Mr. Gibbons, “Based on the average assessed value of property in IML, the average taxation would be approximately $20 - $25 per year.” The other benefit to the residents of IML is that this money would go directly towards the protection of the district and supply much needed training and equipment. Also mentioned was that the tax levied is tax deductable. And the other benefit is that with the money being collected with your taxes you will no longer have to be worried about the timely purchase of a Fire Tag, because you, everyone, will be covered and the cost will be fairly distributed, based on assessed values.
Mr. Gibbons also wanted to point out that we are surrounded by “Districts”. With the exception of Park Hills, all other areas are covered by Districts. This is because they had already determined that the “District” approach vs Fire Departments or Rural Departments was far more beneficial to the residents. Again, taxation vs the purchase of fire tags will allow the cost of running your Fire Protection District to be applied evenly and fairly. It will also provide for the ability to set budgets, which allows for possible scheduling of purchases, up-grades, maintenance and training for the protection of residents and property within the District.
Without the tax levy the District will not have the funds to accomplish the goals to expand and provide the fire protection that everyone deserves. According to Mr. Gibbons, “I only want the best for the people of the District.” “And this includes the residents of IML.” “It is time for the improvements needed to properly protect and serve the people of IML.” “And if this tax levy passes, I (Mr. Gibbons) promise that there will be a sub-station in your area before the year is over.” “And I will work to make sure that your insurance rates are more reasonable.”
