>EPA RESULTS ON LEAD CONTAMINATES FOUND
Monday, March 12, 2012 – IML News - On Thursday, March 8, 2012 representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) met in a public meeting with some concerned citizens from Iron Mountain Lake about the possibility of lead contaminates within the City. Representatives Debbie Kring and Heath Smith, with the EPA, gave a presentation with an explanation of what was discovered to a group of about twenty-five residents. The representatives explained that of the possible two-hundred and ninety-five (295) residential properties within Iron Mountain Lake only fifty (50) signed up to have properties tested. Of the 50 properties tested twenty (20) properties were found to have 400 to 800ppm of lead contamination. Of the 20, eleven (11) were at or near the 800ppm. Also two (2) roads, Ralls and Nevada, were tested and found to be in the 700ppm range.
On a scale:
0 – 240 is considered acceptable
241 – 399 is moderate
400 and above is considered unacceptable
At 400ppm it is considered unsafe for children under 7 years old.
Of the properties and areas that tested 400 to 800ppm, they will be eligible to have the lead contaminates removed, at NO COST to the property owner. In studies, the average cost, to an average yard, to remove lead contaminates could cost as much as $12,000.00. But because of a Super Fund that has been established for the area, Lead Mines will be paying for the clean-up, and it will be free to the residents.
For the most part, the clean-up involves removing the soil/gravel in the affected areas and replacing it with fresh gravel, soil and grass seed. Other areas may be more complex and will be handled on a case to case basis. Any of the affected properties with children under the age of 7 will receive priority status. Then properties that are in the 800ppm range will be the first to be cleaned up and will eventually work their way down to the properties that range in the 400ppm.
If you have not had your property tested, it is not too late. They are still encouraging residents to have your property tested. They will be setting up a base of operations here at the lake very soon or you may call Mr. Heath Smith, On-Scene Coordinator, at 636-326-4726 or 816-718-4277 or email him at smith.heath@epa.gov  to make arrangements to have your property tested.

Audio of this meeting will be made available later today.
