>IML CITY COUNCIL MEETS WITH TAYLOR ENGINEERING ABOUT SEWER PLANT
Monday, March 5, 2012 - IML News - The special meeting held on Friday, March 2, 2012 between the Iron Mountain Lake City Council and Mr. Tim Robbs from Taylor Engineering was very informative. The meeting was called to order and immediately the floor was given to Mr. Robbs to explain their findings and possible options. He began by saying that the sewer operations have two main issues. One was the way that E.Coli was to be treated and secondly the high ammonia content of the lagoon. There is an EPA mandate to treat E.Coli in one of three ways, by chlorine, either in liquid or crystal form or UV treatment, which is the most expensive investment but most efficient and cost saving over the long run. The other issue is the very high ammonia content of the lagoon. The legal measured limit range is between 4.6 – 4.7. The current readings for our system are ranging between the 20’s and 30’s. The procedure to correct this will be very expensive and labor intensive. It will require a total over-haul of the lagoon. It will have to be divided, drained and dredged, and then repeated on the other side. Also the aerators are clogged and not functioning properly. If professionals need to be called in to clean and /or repair these, the price of the over-haul would increase. Mr. Robbs went on to say that there are many steps to attain in order to get to the procurement stage of either trying to acquire a loan, grant or possibly pose a bond issue.
The meeting with Mr. Robbs was very informative and he answered many questions from the public who attended the meeting. Please listen to it for more details. Find AUDIO HERE
Mr. Robbs also mentioned that he would most likely have more information at the next City Council meeting on Monday, March 12, 2012.
Please keep in mind that there is a Special Hearing on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 6 p.m. at IML City Hall. It is about the amendment to Ordinance#36, whereby property owners, and not renters, are responsible for their sewer payments and that bills which become three months past due would be subject to disconnection. The ordinance would also provide a fair opportunity to those with past due amounts to repay them. They would be allowed to make arrangements, whereby they could repay the past due amount, plus their monthly bill, in three equal monthly payments to avoid disconnection. But if a payment is missed the agreement is considered broken and the sewer will be immediately disconnected. In order for the service to be restored the bill must be paid in full, a reconnection fee paid and a possible deposit would be required.
Immediately following the Special Hearing for Ordinance #36 the regular IML City Council Meeting will be held. Please make plans to attend and become informed and participate in your City’s Government.

JUST A NOTE ~
The 2011 Iron Mountain Lake Children's Christmas Fund
and the 2011 Visit With Santa Party were a huge success again this past December.
IML City Hall was given a fresh coat of paint and decked out with beautiful Holiday decorations as 89 Children filed through for the Annual Christmas Party with Santa. There was snacks, treats, a craft and pictures with Santa. Santa's elves, the IML Parks Department and friends, provided the fun, and a great time was had by all.
The IML Children's Christmas Fund was very successful also this year. There was enough money and items donated to help 17 families, who are facing hard times, this past Christmas season. The deserving families recieved a box full of food, and there was wonderful toys for the children too
Many thanks to all who helped with this project and provided the food, clothing and toys for the benefit of those less fortunate in our communtiy. Thank you ALL very much!
